Sand Blasting Hopper — Operating Instructions & Guide

Complete step-by-step guidance for operating your sand blasting hopper safely and efficiently — from loading abrasive media to achieving consistent surface finish on industrial jobs.

Safety First: When using a sand blasting hopper, ALWAYS aim the nozzle at the work piece — never at people. Every operator must wear a blasting helmet, protective gloves, and a dedicated air breathing supply before starting the hopper.

Start Compressor & Open Abrasive Metering Valve on the Hopper

Turn the air ON at the compressor first, then slowly open the abrasive metering valve on the sand blasting hopper to begin media flow. The operator should also open the air breathing supply at this stage.

Set Air Breathing Supply & Position the Deadman's Handle

Adjust the air breathing supply using the belt valve. Place the deadman's handle on the hopper blast hose in the open position, then close the pet cock on the RCV-1 valve securely.

Adjust Water Separator Drain on the Hopper Line

Set the drain cock on the water separator to allow a constant bleed of air and water vapour. This prevents moisture from reaching the hopper blast hose and nozzle, which can clog abrasive flow.

Pressurise the Sand Blasting Hopper & Begin Blasting

Hold the blast hose and holder securely. Pressurise the hopper by closing the deadman's handle — the pop-up valve closes the sealing ring and air passes through the blasting nozzle, expelling abrasive onto the work piece.

Purge & Depressurise the Hopper After Use

Purge the sand blasting hopper to discharge air and residual moisture through the nozzle. Depressurise by releasing the deadman's handle or opening the pet cock on the RCV-1 valve, then close the abrasive metering valve.

Close the pet cock and aim the hopper nozzle at the work piece surface. Close the deadman's handle firmly to pressurise the sand blasting hopper pot.

Pressurise Hopper & Control Abrasive Media Flow

The sand blasting hopper pressurises and air passes through the nozzle. The pot renders open the abrasive metering valve slowly — adjust it to maintain the minimum abrasive feed into the air stream for optimal blasting performance.

Maintain Blasting Angle & Nozzle Distance

Hold the hopper nozzle at a consistent 45–90° angle to the work surface for uniform profile. Keep 150–300 mm distance from the substrate to achieve Sa 2.5 surface finish on steel and structural components.

Shut Down Hopper & Empty Remaining Abrasive

Release the deadman's handle to stop blasting. Depressurise the sand blasting hopper by opening the pet cock or RCV-1 valve. Empty the hopper of abrasive after use — leftover media can absorb moisture and block flow on the next run.

Sand blasting machines operating instruction:

When you use the sand blasting machine/sandblasting hopper/sand blaster/ sand blasting cabinet, then first of all turn the air ON at the compressor, and then open the abrasive metering valve. The operative should protect him/herself with suitable clothing, helmet, and air breathing supply; adjust the air breathing supply using the valve on the belt. Place the deadman's handle in the open position, close the pet cock on the RCV-1 valve. Adjust the drain cock on the water separator to allow a constant bleed of air/water vapour. Hold the blast hose and holder securely. ALWAYS THE NOZZLE AT THE WORK PIECE, NEVER ANYWHERE ELSE AND NEVER NEAR TO PEOPLE. Pressurise the machine by closing deadman's handle, the pop-up value will close the sealing ring, air will then pass through the blasting nozzle. Purge the machine by permitting the air to discharge through the nozzle thus expelling any moisture which may have accumulated when the machine has been not use. Depressurise the machine by either releasing the deadman's handle or opening the pet cock on the RCV-1 valve. Close the abrasive metering valve.

How to operate Sand blasting machine/cabinet/hopper:

First of all open the mini ball valve of RCV; check that the abrasive sieve is in position. Load the chosen abrasive into the machine through the sieve, allowing if to flow through the filler hole in the centre of the conave head. close the pet cock and direct the nozzle towards the work piece and close the deadman's handle.

The machine will pressurise and air will pass through nozzle. The pot render will open the abrasive metering valve slowly, allowing the introduction of the abrasive media into the air stream. Adjust the valve to maintain the minimun amount of abrasive into the air stream

To close the sand blasting machine/sand blasting hopper/sand blasting cabinet down pressurise it by either by releasing the deadman's handle or opening the pet cock on the RCV-1 valve. Empty sand blasting machine/hopper/cabinet of abrasive, otherwise it will become damp and obstruct the flow on restarting.
